December Featured Breed– German Shepherd
The German Shepherd dog was ranked as the 2nd most popular breed of 2010 according to American Kennel Club Registration Statistics. Recognized for its famed role as the world’s leading police, guard and military dog, this breed is also a loving companion and a fast learner.
The name of this breed also reveals some insight into its past. According to the AKC, the German Shepherd originated in Germany and was not exhibited in America until 1907. The breed’s cameo in movies such as Rin-Tin-Tin and Strongheart attributed to the sudden popularity of the German Shepherd.
Observing the German Shepherd you will see a strong and muscular body with a medium length coat usually tan and black, although color may vary. The AKC lists this breed between 22 to 26 inches in height and a range of 77 to 85 pounds in weight. German Shepherds have an identifiable long muzzle with a black nose.
A dependable, intelligent fun-loving family dog, the German Shepherd can do well in an apartment setting as long as they are exercised regularly. They can also be highly trainable early on and enjoy being given a task or job. German Shepherds require grooming such as daily brushing to help reduce shedding and regular exercise. Without a physical outlet, this breed can become restless or destructive – so whether it’s a brisk walk or a fifteen minute game of fetch, your dog will appreciate the challenge!
If you appreciate a loyal pet that can get along with children and families, the German Shepherd is a great choice.
